Today, Gerald Vernon-Jackson, in his role as an Arthritis Champion, has visited QA Hospital to learn more about the Rheumatology ward.
Before touring around Rheumatology and Orthopaedics, Gerald met with representatives from Portsmouth Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA) to discuss support for people suffering musculoskeletal conditions.
Gerald learnt about the facts surrounding musculoskeletal conditions:
- More than 10 million adults and 12 thousand children in the UK are affected by musculoskeletal conditions.
- Such conditions account for up to 30% of GP visits in England.
- They are the single biggest cause of the growing burden of disability in the UK. Much of this is avoidable disability.
Gerald commented: “I hope I can help make a real difference as an Arthritis Champion. My mother suffers from severe arthritis so I’ve seen first-hand how debilitating it can be. Today has given me the opportunity to really learn about the detail around care for those with such conditions. I’d like to thank Portsmouth ARMA for setting up this visit and being so helpful and informative.”
