Portsmouth is to become a dementia friendly city thanks to local Lib Dem councillors.

Lib Dem councillor Will Purvis put forward a motion to a meeting of the full council which was passed. The council will now work towards making Portsmouth a 'Dementia Friendly Community', a status officially endorsed by the Alzheimers' Society.

Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for Portsmouth South, said;

"There are over 2000 people living with dementia in Portsmouth, it so important that we, as a community and as a caring city, fully understand and appreciate what it means to live with dementia."

Councillor Will Purvis added;

"Almost everyone knows someone who is affected by dementia and other similar mental health conditions so I'm pleased that the council will be taking this seriously."
